Meet Jeremy Reed, our Wine Director at The Charter Oak! Jeremy joined us this year and has brought a wealth of knowledge to our team.

1. Tell me about your background and certifications

I started working in restaurants at the age of 15, and through the years and with more experience I fell in love with the beverage component of restaurants. When I was working as a bartender, I discovered my talent for wine and learned about the Court of Master Sommeliers. It was shortly thereafter that I signed up to take the Introductory Sommelier Course and Certified Sommelier Exam and passed both. Over the next three years I studied and prepared for the Advanced Sommelier Exam, which I subsequently took and passed in 2014. The following year I was invited to participate in the Rudd Round Table, an invitation-only collection of Advanced Sommeliers.

2. What was the driving force behind your interest in wine?

When I began working in the Sacramento restaurant industry, I saw an opportunity to fill a void. At the time, there were few (if any) sommeliers working in Sacramento and I was motivated to make a name for myself.

3. What does a typical day at The Charter Oak look like for you?

My day typically starts with looking at our sales reports and inventory levels, reordering wines as needed. During service I assist in managing our team and working with guests on their beverage needs. I also schedule winery visits and educational activities for our team, these are a fun way to bond with our team members and learn about wine!

4. Do you have a personal favorite wine at the moment?

This time of year, I gravitate towards Champagne and Sparkling Wine- anything with bubbles.

5. With the holidays approaching, what is your favorite wine varietal during these cold months?

Gamay, a light bodied style of red wine is perfect for the cold months. It is not so hearty that you are going to need something to eat, but just full enough to warm your belly.
